What is the notice period at 1BOX Self Storage?

At 1BOX, we have a notice period of 15 calendar days. So if your plans change, no stress! Just let us know, and we’ll handle the rest.

Can I start renting on any day?

Absolutely! You can start your rental contract on any day of the month. From the start date, you’ll pay for your storage space and be ready to securely store your belongings.

Can I change the size of my unit at any time?

Yes, our contracts are flexible. If you need more or less space, you can easily change your unit. Just contact the site manager, and it will be arranged.

Does the automatic debit stop once my rental contract ends?

Yes, the automatic debit stops once your rental contract ends and there are no outstanding invoices. No hassle, just simple and easy.

Is there a minimum rental period at 1BOX Self-Storage?

Yes, the minimum rental period is one month. After that, a 15-day notice period applies. Remember to cancel on time; otherwise, your contract will automatically renew. Simple and convenient!

Can I reserve a storage space?

Absolutely! You can reserve a unit up to one month in advance. Contact the facility manager to make all the arrangements and make sure your storage space is ready when you need it.

Can I rent a unit for a short period, like a few weeks?

The minimum rental period is one month. After that, you can cancel with a 15-day notice. So, yes, you can rent the unit for a short period!

Do I pay BTW?

At 1BOX, private individuals don’t have to pay BTW when renting a storage unit. However, business renters do need to pay BTW. For garage boxes, 1BOX is legally required to charge BTW to both private and business customers. We keep it fair and transparent for everyone.

What information do you need to finalise a rental contract?

For a rental contract, we need the following information:

  • Private individuals: Identification, a recent bank statement or mail, and a bank card with your IBAN number.
  • Businesses: Identification, a Chamber of Commerce extract, and VAT/BTW number.

How can I terminate the rental?

Want to cancel your rental? Notify us in writing via email, mail, or directly at the 1BOX location. We need your name, storage unit number, and the end date. Remember, our notice period is 15 calendar days. We’re here to help with everything!

What happens if I don’t pay my rent on time?

If you miss a payment, let us know. We understand that sometimes things go wrong and are here to help you find a solution.

Insurance

Why is insurance necessary?

All our locations are insured, but your stored goods are not automatically covered. That is why insurance is mandatory, so that your belongings are protected in the event of fire, storm, burglary, or water damage, for example. We arrange this automatically when you rent.

Is insurance mandatory when renting storage space at 1BOX?

Yes, when you rent storage space, you are required to insure your stored items for the entire rental period. For rental agreements entered into on or after October 1, 2025, coverage is linked to the size of your storage space. At 1BOX, we arrange this automatically during the rental process, so that your belongings are properly insured from day one. The cost of insurance coverage is included in the total price for renting your unit.

Can I use my own insurance instead of 1BOX's?

No, it is not possible to use insurance other than that offered by 1BOX. To keep claims simple and offer everyone the same protection, all units are covered by our standard policy for rental agreements entered into on or after October 1, 2025.

What does the insurance policy cover?

The insurance company we work with covers direct loss or damage to property during the storage period caused by:

  • Fire and smoke damage
  • Storm or flood (as defined in the policy)
  • Damage caused by third parties (for example, when a driver crashes into the fence)
  • Theft after break-in in the storage unit or storage facility
  • Pests

If your unit is affected by one of these risks, you can file a claim up to the insured amount stated on your insurance certificate. Claims are subject to the policy conditions and to the storage of only permitted goods.

How much does the insurance cost (per storage unit)?

For contracts concluded on or after October 1, 2025, the premium depends on the size of your unit. You will see the exact amount during the online booking process or at the counter. Do you need a higher coverage limit? Then you can take out additional insurance with a reputable insurance company. The additional insurance must include a clause in favor of 1BOX, under which the insurer waives all rights of recourse against 1BOX, 1BOX’s insurers, and contractual partners.

1BOX insurance premiums: 

  • Locker (1m³): For €5 per month, you are insured for a value of €1,000.
  • Storage space <4 m²: For €17.50 per month, you are insured for a value of €2,500.
  • Storage space >4-6 m²: For €20.00 per month, you are insured for a value of €5,000.
  • Storage space >7-13 m²: For €25.00 per month, you are insured for a value of €7,500.
  • Storage space >13 m²: For €27.50 per month, you are insured for a value of €10,000.

I rented a unit before October 1, 2025. Where can I find more information?

The new terms and conditions apply to customers who entered into a rental agreement after October 1, 2025. Please feel free to contact us at 085 – 0161611 or contact the relevant 1BOX location directly if you have any questions about this.

Where can I read the full insurance terms and conditions?

What can I store?

Can I park a car at 1BOX?

Not all units are suitable for car storage. Car storage is available at the following 1BOX locations: Den Bosch, Rijswijk, Goes, Hellevoetsluis, Groningen, Helmond, Heerlen, Utrecht and Breda. Contact the facility manager to discuss all the details.

Can I store a motorcycle at 1BOX?

Yes, you can store a motorcycle at all 1BOX locations, but the battery must be disconnected for fire safety reasons.

Is there electricity in the unit for a trickle charger?

Motorcycles can be stored with the battery disconnected. Storing an old-timer car with a trickle charger is not possible.

What items am I not allowed to store?

You cannot store explosives, weapons, ammunition, fireworks, drugs, chemical products, jewellery, furs, art objects, live animals, waste, gas bottles, batteries, food, or radioactive materials. The complete list is in our terms and conditions. If in doubt, always contact the location manager.

Are there limitations on how much I can store in my unit?

As long as everything fits in your storage unit and the door closes properly, you can store as much as you want. Unsure? Ask our facility manager!

Express Stores & 1BOX App

How do I rent a storage unit in the Express Store?

At the 1BOX Self Storage Express Stores in Best, Boxtel, Bergen op Zoom, Goes, Utrecht, Alkmaar, Almere, Helmond Kanaaldijk en Heerlerbaan, you can select the desired size and location of your unit in the building yourself. Enter your contact details, agree to the rental terms, and verify your identity via iDIN. You’ll then receive a confirmation email and an SMS with a verification code to install the 1BOX app.

I didn’t receive a verification code via SMS

If you didn’t receive a verification code, use the “Forgot Password” function in the app to activate your account. Check if your phone number was entered correctly. Otherwise, contact us at 045-8510176 or heerlen@1box.nl.

How does the 1BOX app work?

Use the verification code from the SMS to log in. Accept the terms of use and change your password. The app ensures you always have access to your storage space.

Why do I need to change my password?

Creating a unique password and keeping it safe ensures only you have access to your storage space.

Can I authorise someone to access my unit if I’m not there?

Yes, through the app, you can easily grant someone else access to your storage space. You remain in control of who enters.

How can I open the facility doors?

The facility doors can only be opened with the app. Make sure the Bluetooth is on and that you are within 5 metres of the door.

What kind of phone do I need for the 1BOX app?

For the 1BOX app, you need an iPhone with iOS 12.0 or higher or an Android phone with KitKat 4.4 or higher.

Tips if the 1BOX app isn’t working

  • Check if Bluetooth and location services are enabled.
  • Restart the app.
  • Check for updates.
  • Sometimes, the signal can be disrupted by certain vehicles.

Safety & Access

Are my belongings safe at 1BOX?

Yes, all our facilities are secured with cameras and access codes. The facility managers conduct daily checks.

Is there lighting in the storage units?

Yes, all our units are well-lit, so you always have good visibility of your belongings.

Is using a lock mandatory?

Yes, your storage space is secured with a special locking system where you place a personal lock. We sell suitable locks at our locations, so you don’t have to worry. Safety first!

Does 1BOX have access to my unit?

No, only you (and authorised persons) have access to your unit. Our facility managers and other staff do not have a key to your unit.

When can I access my belongings?

Our storage facilities are open 365 days a year from 06:00 to 23:00.

Are there extra costs for access outside regular hours?

No, you can access your belongings every day from 06:00 to 23:00 without extra costs. Convenient, right?

Do you have climate control in the facility?

Yes, all our locations are equipped with modern climate control. This way, your belongings remain dry and frost-free all year round!

How do I know what size unit I need?

To determine the right size storage space, you can use our handy online storage calculator or ask our facility managers for advice.

Do you rent moving vans?

No, we don’t rent moving vans. But don’t worry, just contact a local rental company and they’ll help you out!

Do you offer moving boxes and packing materials?

Yes, we have a wide range of moving boxes and packing materials available. Everything you need to safely store your belongings can be found at 1BOX!

Is my storage unit accessible by car?

Each facility has convenient storage units accessible by car, as well as multiple entrances with roll-up doors. Additionally, many loading and unloading areas are covered. At our Helmond location, we also have parking spaces within the premises.

And don’t worry about carrying heavy items; we have transport equipment available at all locations to help you easily move your belongings to your unit!
